Yilo Krobo: After a power outage, health facilities rack up GH30k in debt in just two weeks.

Due to the fuel procurement for the generators in the various health facilities over a two-week period, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Health Directorate in the Eastern Region owes more than GH30,000.

The Energy Company of Ghana (ECG) disconnected the electricity supply to the municipalities of Yilo and Lower Manya, which caused the debt to build.

While a health center’s average fuel cost over a 24-hour period is GH200, some facilities may spend as much as GH5,000, depending on their operations.

In the event that the electrical supply is not immediately restored, the medical facilities will soon have to close.

Atua Government Hospital, St. Martins Hospital, Yilo District Hospital, Somanya Policlinic, as well as several CHPS and health centers, are among the affected healthcare facilities.

The Municipal Health Director, Mrs. Irena Offei, discussed the issues on Wednesday, August 3 with Alfred Ocansey on 3FM’s Sunrise. She stated that “the bill as at August 1, 2022 was GH30,000.”

For instance, St. Martin’s spends GH5,000 in a day, and we pay for it with IGF (internally generated funds).

At the health directorate, we spend between GH300 and GH500 on fuel each day, or GH100 to GH100 within 24 hours, she said.

According to Mrs. Offei, “[the health institutions] have been without electricity for more than a week and we are pleading with the government to restore power supplies.”

She stated, “On Tuesday, there was a discussion on the subject, but the MCE has not responded.”

MCE reacts

When contacted, Eric Tetteh, the MCE for Yilo Krobo, said he had not attended the meeting in question.

Because it was planned by two NDC MPs, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi for the lower Manya Krobo Constituency and Albert Tetteh Nyakotey for the Yilo Krobo Constituency, I was not present at the meeting.

We’re working on it, he said. The ECG MD told us the problem is a national security issue, thus the national security also entered.
